How to Host a 90s Summer Potluck

How to Host a 90s Summer Potluck

I hear we're having a 90s summer and I've never been more on board.

The nostalgia for 'simpler times', less overthinking things, less perfection seeking, is something I think we're all craving.

A summer that feels a little less curated and a little more lived in.

Which is probably why I love the idea of a 90s summer potluck.

Just good food, lawn chairs, a few mismatched serving bowls, and people you genuinely enjoy spending time with.

If you're looking for an excuse to gather this summer, here are a few ways to bring a little 90s nostalgia to your next backyard get-together.

Keep the Food Simple

The best potlucks are the ones where nobody overthinks it.

Think pasta salads, fruit platters, chips and dip, watermelon wedges, veggie trays, store bought brownies, and whatever family recipe someone insists on bringing every single time.

Assign broad categories rather than specific dishes. One person brings dessert, another brings a salad, someone else handles drinks.

The beauty of a potluck is that everyone contributes a little, so no one person has to do everything.

Bring Back the Classic Summer Games

Put the phones away.

Swap tech for a deck of cards (Uno for bonus points). A frisbee. A soccer ball. Sidewalk chalk for the kids (or the adults). Maybe a sprinkler if it's super hot out.

Some of my favourite summer memories involve absolutely no planned activities at all. We just found ways to entertain ourselves.

The same tends to happen when you give people space to relax and connect.

Create the Ultimate 90s Playlist

This might be the most important tip.

A good playlist instantly sets the mood.

Think Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, TLC, Blink-182, The Cranberries, and whatever songs transport you straight back to summer vacation.

Lean Into Nostalgic Snacks

There's something delightful about serving foods that remind people of childhood.

  • Freezies
  • Popcorn
  • Fruit roll-ups
  • Popsicles
  • Watermelon
  • Lemonade in a giant pitcher

You don't need to serve all of them, but including a few nostalgic favourites tends to spark stories and conversations that wouldn't happen otherwise.

Use What You Have

One of the reasons I love potlucks is that they naturally feel less formal.

  • Pull out the folding chairs.
  • Use the picnic blanket.
  • Mix and match dishes.
  • Borrow a cooler from a neighbour if you need one.

Some of the most memorable gatherings happen when people stop worrying about creating the perfect atmosphere and focus on creating a welcoming one instead.

Make Food Easy to Grab and Share

Buffet-style always wins.

Set everything out on a table and let people help themselves.

If you're prepping ingredients ahead of time, reusable beeswax wraps are one of my favourite ways to keep fruits, veggies, sandwiches, and snacks covered until guests arrive. They keep food protected without creating a mountain of disposable plastic wrap by the end of the day.

Plus, bright, cheerful patterns feel right at home at a summer gathering.

Don't Forget What People Actually Remember

Years from now, nobody will remember whether your potato salad was homemade or store-bought.

They'll remember laughing so hard they cried. Sitting outside with friends as the night air cools the summer heat.

And maybe that's the real reason we're all feeling called to a 90s summer - it forces us to be present.

So this summer, invite a few people over. Ask everyone to bring something to share. Put on your favourite playlist and let the evening unfold.

Sometimes the best gatherings are the ones that feel a little less planned and a little more like summer used to.
